Starting Rotifer Cultures

Postby Michael » Thu Jan 01, 2009 8:38 pm

Any tips and/or tricks to maintaining rotifer cultures in the easiest way possible?

I want to order another starter culture from REED, but do not want to experience another crash. I was thinking 3 or 4 larger mason jars with dedicated airstones and green water? Thoughts?

I think you should use more water volume than a mason jar. 5 gallon buckets work great. Change the rotifer water often to prevent a crash and have a backup culture (or more). Create another culture each time you change water.

Scott

How many separate Rotifer cultures do you have going? Also, are they all 5-gallon buckets?

Do you heat the water or add separate lighting?

Do you have other photos of your Rotifer Setup other than what is on the main site?

Thanks!

I usually keep 2 cultures going in 5 gallon buckets. I have sometimes taken some rotifers out and put them in a 20oz drink bottle and put them in the fridge. They last a good while in the fridge without any more food. That is just for emergencies. I don't usually add any light. They sit next to a sliding glass dooor and get a good bit of natural sunlight and heat from that. If you don't have that situation, I would reccommend a small light and a small heater. I will try to get some pictures but I lost the charger for my camera.

I have 4 separate cultures lightly bubbling away in 2 Liter Glass containers. I added a few Rotifers to the fry tank and am experimenting with Co-culturing before my Batch 8 hatches. It seems that the Rotifer-Diet water can raise the ammonia level in the tank? Is this true?

I took 20ml samples of each container and they showed quite a few Rotifers. I am feeding morning and night about 2 drops each feed. The water is a light lime green color.
No heater and I am covering them up with a light green fabric.

Rotifer diet can definitly raise ammonia levels. I have seen it happen on some of my batches. There just needs to be a good balance between water volume (possibly water changes) and greenwater. As the great Albert Einstein said "No amount of experimentation can ever prove me right; a single experiment can prove me wrong". Keep on truckin.
