Picassos Breeding

Postby Colby » Thu May 28, 2009 12:08 pm

Hello, I stumbled across this website yesterday and after a few minutes of reading through posts I knew I had to join! I don't know if I missed the forum for introductions so I suppose I will just do it here.

Anyway I am a college student working on my undergrad in biology and a fish geek with a passion for clownfish. I am currently working with Amphiprion Percula var. "Picasso" and Amphiprion Ocellaris var. "Snowflake", however I have bred and raised over 15k-20k clownfish of other species as well as Seahorses, Centropyge angels, cardinals, gobies etc. I recently had an article published in Aquarium Fish International about clownfish and the necessity ofr captive bred fish. I am hoping to revise/publish a phylogenetic tree of the Clownfishes by the end of my undergrad program and continue work with marine ornamentals!

I look forward to chatting with everyone here!

Anyway, as the topic title says I have some Picasso clownfish breeding. Currently my Picasso selection includes 4 pairs.

Three picasso males with regular percula females. One pair is breeding (female WC from SI and the male *supposedly* also WC from SI, but I have my suspicions on that) and the other two are both to young, hopefully in the next few months!

One Picasso x Picasso pair, the female WC from Bali and the male *supposedly* from PNG.

So here are some pictures! The pair is due for its third nest sometime this week. The first nest was small and eaten almost immediately, the second nest was about 600 eggs and was eaten by the male about 3 days after it was laid, I am hoping he will get it right this time! ;)

Hmmm...seems like the photos are too large for this website?

Wonderful post. Glad to have you here on the forum Colby. I too would love a picasso or two. I am getting my hatchery setup again. My Ocellaris keep laying eggs and I haven't done anything with the fry in about 3 months. I wrote / own breedclownfish.com and it is great to have some an experienced breeder such as yourself on here. Keep us posted on your batches.

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone!

I am a moderator on MOFIB and a memeber of many of the larger forums, however I have really grown to like this forum as it seems to be a very friendly place to share ideas!

I will be happy to start a list, if that is permitted here. I don't want to step on anyones toes..

I will try making the pictures smaller, however I am not very tech savvy lol.

As an update, the pair laid again last night. It looks like they are on a 12 day spawning cycle. It appeared as if the male did a slightly better job at fertilizing the eggs this go round, however he quit fertilizing while the female was still laying...

It looked like they had laid a nest of roughly 1000 eggs however only 200-300 were fertilized. Today it does look as if the male is taking care of them better than previously and he doesn't seem to be eating them as much as the last two times. I do not have high hopes for this batch, but I am hoping on the next few spawns they will work better as a pair. At this point they dont seem to be working as cohesively while spawning as they should be, but of course they are a new pair and the male is still young.

On the up side one of my other pairs consisting of the WC female from Bali and *WC male from PNG* have been cleaning non-stop and the female has been gorging her self, so it looks like their bout with crypto hasnt thrown them off to much!

Tenative list:
