Day 1 Spawn 01/08/09

My clownfish just spawned this evening. I got rid of the 2.5 gallon fry and switched back to a 5 gallon for easier water monitoring, egg transfer, etc.

My ammonia alert badge was always reading "alert" with the 2.5 even with numerous siphoning, and water changes. My thoughts are: too little water may be a bad thing. I lost my last two fry from batch seven yesterday.....

On a good note, I have two very healthy Clownfish (tank raised on frozen rotifers and live baby brine) from batch six doing just fine in my other 5 gallon tank. I have four separate live rotifer cultures I am going to prepare tomorrow for the fry from batch Eight that I figure will hatch the evening of 01/15/09.

I am glad I got that far with frozen Rotifers with batch Six for now, I can compare how well batch Eight does with live Rotifers. I am sure I will have a much higher and healthier success rate.

Michael-sorry to hear about batch 7. I have a good feeling about batch 8 :D . More water volume in the fry tank, and live rotifers is key. I think the 5 gallon tank will help your ammonia problem but I would still keep an eye on it. If water quality becomes an issue, I have seen some people use an extremely small sponge filter to help improve the quality. This issue is that you have to make it so you are not hurting or damaging the fry. I also put a couple pieces of cycled live rock in my fry tank. Lots of people say it is not the best thing to do because you could introduce bad bacteria to the fry tank. I feel like the added benificial bacteria helps to break down the harmful compounds such as ammonia and nitrite into (less harmful) nitrate. Best of luck. Thank you to eveyone contributing on this forum. I look forward to reading everyone one else's experciences with clownfish fry.

OK.....call me crazy....

While picking up the live Rotifers at the LFS tonight, I purchased a really nice established pair of Ocellaris clownfish. The female and male have very nice color and shape. They look ready to breed. I will have a vacant bubble tip anenome in my 90 gallon parent tank that I will remove for them to host in. My thought is, the anenome will make them feel more "comfortable" and inspire them to spawn. I have them in a dedicated bio-cube system which has some nice smaller and flat pieces of live rock in it.

Scott-

Thank you for the information, I do feel good about batch *8* as well. I have already taken your advice and have sponge filters in both fry and rearing tanks. I have the tube where the air bubbles travel up right at the surface of the water. I am thinking this will help reduce any fry swimming into the bubbles and getting damaged. I will keep everyone posted on Batch *8* progress.

Michael,

What kinds of foods are you feeding? What would be the protein content?

Michael

Your new Ocel Clowns are a handsom pair. Good luck with batch 8. I would love to see a picture of your batch 8 spawn if that is possible. I am really hoping my fish spawn today.

I also bought two new black and white Ocel yesterday. But I did not buy them as a pair. Will they pair-up by themselves ??????

Thank you

Kathy your new Ocellaris clownfish will pair up themselves. It might take some time though. I hope you have another tank for them to go into because they will most likely distract your current clownfish from spawning. Best of luck.

Scott,

Thank you for your reply...Yes I have the new fish in a separate tank. The seem to like each other already. I also bought two Maroons. They have hardly noticed one another and are keeping separated. The two blacks and one maroon hang-out together. Here is a photo.
