Hello,

I'm looking to breed clownfish for myself. I have no experience in salt water tanks or anything. Looking to setup something small to start. I was hoping someone can help me and walk me thru starting up ...

I would extremely appreciate any help

Thank you

I think the best help would be piking up Joyce Wilkerson's book - Clownfishes A guide to their captive care, breeding and natural history.

The new marine aquarium by Michael Paletta is a good book for general setup information.

Both books would be a great read to start and get you acclimated to setting up a salt water tank. You should try and read up on it as much as you can prior to starting.

WWW.liveaquaria.com is a place that i like to go and read up on the care of marine fish and coral. I purchased live rock from here.

www.wetwebmedia.com is a great site for alot of information. I put a link to their marine set-up below. I've spent alot of time reading through their FAQ's because somebody usually asked a question I had. The site was started by Robert Fenner - he wrote another great book to read when starting out.

Sorry to throw books at you...but I found them to be very helpful with alot of the questions I had.

I looked a little bit more since I noticed Joyce Wilkerson's book is currently out of print, the link allows you to purchase it used. I looked at Robert Fenner's book and noticed the first copy is going for around $4.00 used. I think at this price it would be a great pick up.

The books mentioned discuss using live rock as part of the biological filtration.

I think at a minimum you would need a 30 gallon tank, live rock, powerheads for circulation, a protein skimmer and a flourescent light. I like using hang on tank filters as well because they filter the water with carbon. You can probable do away without the protein skimmer if you keep up on the weekly water changes. 2-4 gallons a week, (bi-weekly)

They recommend water movement around 10x tank, (30 gallon around 300 gph), live rock was suggested 1lb - 1 1/2lb per gallon. (30-40 lbs). I went with compact flourescents for light, it's fine for the live rock, and corals etc that require low light. You can add live rock slowly, a little bit at a time until until you reach the number of pounds you want. It can get expensive, do alot of up front investigation. I forget what the start up water cyclye period is before you can add inhabitants to the tank. (couple months ?) Water from an established tank or live rock will help expediate this cycle. The first half of Robert Fenner's book discusses set up, filtration, lighting ect...the second half is about fish / coral / inverts etc and their care. Good Luck...

Unfortuately you'll need to read up on it.

You'll Need to start:
Tank, light, filtration, heater, salt, probable around 2 months for your water to cyle,
hydrometer (test salt content of water), test kits

Cost will be dependent upon your set up. I would say min 30 gallon tank.

Check local pet stores, they usually have complete set ups for saltwater tanks, petco comes to mind, which should include the min tank, base, light, hydrometer, maybe salt. There you would get a idea of the set up cost. After you add the water you need to let it cycle before you can add any inhabitants.

Next:
Live rock?, tank decoration etc...
pair of clownfish, something to clean algea off your tank, food, bucket for water changes, siphon to do water changes, air pump to aerate water for water changes. Inverts to take care of algae, tank mates?

Price will be dependent upon your set up.

Next:
Time, I had a pair of ocell for 5 years never mated, Alot depends on their enviroment, food, etc.

Next:
If /when they spawn, tank for fry, heater, air pump for cultures, filtration, light, rotifers, food for rotifers, brine shrimp hatchery, smaller food for fry to grow out. I cultured my own photoplankton and used misc equip from years with fish tanks and prob cost me around $100

I'm sure there is alot that I missed, Some of the tanks I had when I first started weren't very successful because I wasn't sure what I was doing. Joyce Wilkerson's book does a great job of breaking it down. She decribes the different types of systems that she had success with.

Good Luck
