culturing photoplankton

Postby davek0819 » Fri Jun 26, 2009 9:11 am

Does anybody know the shelf (frig) live of photoplankton? My clarkii clown have been laying eggs about every two weeks for the past two months. I picked up some photoplankton and rotifer cultures from aqua farms and I'm about to set up my culture stations. I"ve been feeding DT's to my tank every other day and figured I would start using my new culture instead.

When feeding the rotifers do I add the saved photo from the refrigerator or would it be better to keep some on the shelf? I think I read that it would last a week unfrigerated.

You can store rotifers in the fridge for about a month. I keep about 2/3 of a half-gallon milk jug at a time. They'll be fine as long as you leave the top off so you have air exchange. No need to feed them because they'll all go dormant. Restart the culture by warming them up to room temperature and then using it as you would a new culture that just came in the mail.

Phytoplankton keeps a few weeks, but it doesn't come back as easily. What you can do is store it in jugs and use that to feed the rotifers, then replace it with new stuff. Make sure you rotate it so you don't use any stale stuff. Make sure to let it warm up before putting it in the rotifer bucket so you don't shock them into going dormant. Also, check the NH3/NO2 level every few days -- toss the whole jug of phyto if you don't like the numbers.
