Lots of controversy on that. I use a 10 gallon tank. In the past, I've bred lots of freshwater species, and I've used 5-1/2 and even 2-1/2 gallon tanks to hatch the eggs and raise the fry for the first week or two (depending on the species). I might go back to doing this with clowns as an experiment. If I were to hatch them in a 2-1/2, I'd only keep them in there for about 10 days. Then I'd go to the 10 gallon. It works very well, and since they get moved to a bigger tank, the hatch tank gets a good cleaning in time for the next batch. Once they get about a month or two old, I split them up into more 10 gallon tanks or put them in a 29, depending on how many there are. If you don't do this, they get crowded. OTOH, if you put them in too big a tank, you need a lot of food for them to find it, and then most of it falls to the ground and rots.
Everybody has their own way of doing things. Once you find something that works, your next steps are to find ways to improve what you're doing to get better success. I hope you find this useful.
