Hi

just a few questions, My other half is wanting me to set up a clownfish breeding tank as its her favourite fish apparently  , anyway we are wondering can we have just a fish only tank with coral sand and ocean rock, and for filtration an fx5?? or do we have to have a more complex setup??

thanks

p.s be gentle first time with saltwater i currently keep mbuna cichlids

The FX5 looks like a nice filter, from what I read on canister filters you have to keep up on the maintenace / cleaning. Depending on the size of the tank you might want to add an additional power head for additonal water movement.

I had luck with sand, live rock, hang-on tank filter, and a powerhead in a 20 gallon tank. They recommend a protein skimmer to help remove excess nutriuents from the water but another option would be to keep up on water changes.

I've found mysis shrimp, frozen, a great food for my clowns. To help keep the nutrients down defrost in a seperate container and strain through a net before feeding.

Another tip I found was to pick up some aquarium sealant and run a bead of caulk under the lip, inside the tank, at the top trim piece of the tank. This helps eliminate salt creep.

In my opinion it should work, I'm going to attempt to grow out two of my clowns with less that that. (same as listed above) The live rock really makes a difference regarding filtration.
